More than 300 bikers, from the pro to the amateur, only 6 females though, paraded from Robinsons Mall thru KCC, Gaisano, soon to open SM Mall, then on to the start of the race at corner of Circumferential Road and Hi-way to Davao by around 9:30 AM. Warm weather. Sun was up really hot. I had to improvise my hanky to a kafir which i placed under the helmet, to protect my nape from sun burn. Two bikers in previous bike runs had died.
The most senior biker, a veteran of all 8 previous bike runs, slipped on a treacherous trail, broke his helmet, and suffered facial bruises. Race marshals offered help. He refused. Obstinate to earn the record for being the most senior biker - veteran of all 9 races, he made it to finish line, with a little help from the marshals. They changed the route for him, and made it shorter.
I paired with a retired police colonel, rolando noveno. We joined the race for fun. Even if we were to finish last, at least we would have endured a gruelling off-road mountain biking experience.
We went thru 6 creeks, carried our bikes thru treacherous up hill down hill slopes, and crossed dusty roads before reaching the finishing line in boundary of Conel and Lagao.
In the 18 years i have been a gensan part time resident, it was my first time to visit Olympog and some other remote parts of the city.
After a hearty packed lunch, chicken and kinilaw at Lagao Brgy Hall, we ended the half day 30 km run exhausted but happy. It was fun burning up the fat, good exercise and experience.
