Well people, that's it...summer camp 2006 is officially at an end and now it is time to let the big time adventures begin. Yes, I have ventured finally into reality from the small (real america) country town of Greenville, CA to the big smoke of SAN FRANCISCO! I had a great last few weeks of camp. On the last day off I warmed up to Vegas with a trip to its shabbier sister city of Reno (as in the REM song) with Matt K (US) and Neil (NZ). Reno is about 100 miles from camp so it was a good trip but a few drinks en route helped the passage of time. We got so lucky with a fine view of downtown neons from the 28th floor room of the Circus Circus hotel/casino and some good drinks and chill out music in the room made a great start to the night! Then came the actual passage out of the room and into the generic depths of casino lifestyle...HOWEVER..this place was possibly the biggest anticlimax that I've experienced since Australia lost the 2003 Rugby World Cup (sorry guys! :) I think we worked out that the average age of the people there was between 48-52 and it was red-neck sweaty heaven!...and the girls who wait on you with drinks...well they were all between 50-60 (and looked it bad!) and were dressed in tiny skirts and transparent cheap tights...it was REALLY amazing...however a tad rotten! So due to the lack of entertainment we had a few drinks and a few more drinks and played a game of blackjack and had a few more drinks and fell asleep...so it wasn't too bad...but it was a hell of an experience but rest assured I'm assured that Las Vegas is like Premiership where as Reno is more like Kidderminster Harriers standard! Well we're now in San Fran and today I sailed to Alcatraz and visited the Golden Gate Bridge..both of which are fantastic experiences, especially Alcatraz island with it's history, Al Capone, Nicolas Cage and Sir Sean in the movie 'The Rock' and anecdotes of escape and solitary confinement. I got to go into solitary confinement in 'the hole' for about a minute and that was plenty long enough for a good catholic boy like me thank you very much! So I'm here with Matt K, Jorge, Dan and Brendan and we're staying out of the city on a horse ranch with Matt's ex-girlfriend and family. The dad is from NSW in Australia and the son, Clancy is big into rugby so we ended up having a big game of touch the other night in the horse barn. It was awesome and made me realise how much I actually need to exercise :)
One of Matt K's kids' parent's (got that?) has a time share apt in downtown SF which he genourously allowed us to use last night..and this place was sheek...we nick-named it the Agatha Christie suite as it was straight out of Poirot..I'll upload a picture. We went out last night to an Irish bar where a group was playing and I asked the guy of he knew any Christie Moore..he got me up there to sing 'Ride on' with him in front of a bar of people.. a great feeling and I'm so glad I did it. We ended up in a Ha-Ha/ Tiger Tiger bar with all the camp girls for one of the girls' swansong as she's going back to Wisconsin today and tonight we're meeting up with Devin (a top top guy and elementary school teacher from Greenville who was also a counselor at Coppecreek)and Neil...should be some more good fun on the way!

Well that's about it for now but be assured that another update will follow from the bright lights of Las Vegas before I fly to Guatemala.

Adios for now everybody,

Martin :)
