Happy 2013! This morning we both woke up in pretty rough shape, and had a lot of trouble getting out of bed at a reasonable hour. We had initially planned to go to the train station bright and early to book seats to Chang Mai but instead we didn't get there until noonish. Because we were late all of the seats on the train we wanted had sold out and so we got stuck sitting in different cars on the 11:30 night train. Lessons learned 1) don't drink yourself silly when back packing 2) book your train ahead of time.

Once we finally got moving, we rented bikes and travelled around town to different temples and ruins. We saw the largest Buddha in Thailand! Woot woot. We also went to the historical study center of Ayuthaya, a gift created for a Japanese leader who made good relations with Thailand. It was interesting, but we were hoping to learn more about why Ayuthaya became the ruins it is today and why it is no longer the capital of Thailand. Oh well! Finally we went on a boat tour to see the some of the temples off the island. The last temple ruins we saw at sun set, and they were stunning.

We now sit at the train station patiently awaiting our train to Chiang Mai...Tori is sleeping and now I have befriended a Thai man who has travelled to 59 countries painting and playing music. Newspaper clippings back his story up of having a PhD in the fine arts...a very interesting conversation ensued and finished off with some Bob Dylan sing along in the train station minutes before our train arrived.
