8th April to 30th April - Grape picking in the Barossa Valley
As we enjoyed grape picking so much....no, as we needed a bit more money we decided to head to the next grape region in South Australia in search of more wine, I mean work.
Actually we should admit that grape picking work wasn't actually too bad and we were both getting into the whole grapes, vineyards, drinking nice wine thing. With a bit of help from our friends Terry and Sue we were getting to grips with the different wines and grapes and all that suff and we were and still plan to enjoy it.
Barossa Valley is a famous winemaking region with wines such as Jacobs Creek, Wolf Blass, Penfolds being made there and these pretty important wines which we have since found out. It is really a beautiful area there and we kinda fell for it despite the rain! It is very much about good wine and food there so lots of markets and nice shops just great for us.
We managed to get work quite easily for a small winery called Gibson, where it was only myself, Daniel, another guy Heyguan and our boss that did the picking so it was very different from McClaren Vale where we worked sometimes with 40 other people. It was also very different in that in McClaren Vale there was no contact with the winery and in Barossa we were working for and with them. This was great as we got to see how the wine was made and of course try some of their wines.
Another job opportunity then came up for us to work with Rockford winery, another famous winemakers in Australia which produce some of, if not the best wine I have ever tasted. It was again a really great experience working for them as we got to try the wine and see close up how things were made. We also got to do a pump-over of the wine, which is when they get the wine from the bottom of the barrell and our it over the top so it all mixes together. I also tested the temperature and bomain (sugar) of the wine. It was all great fun and really interesting for us both.
For Easter we had a great weekend with our friends Terry and Sue at there home at Fisherman's Bay - a lovely seaside town north of Barossa. We enjoyed some lovely wine and food and they even got us to try Blue Swimmer Crab (famous to South Aus) which was lovely and Oysters which was not so lovely but good to try. They were cold and slimly and it took us about 20 attempts to actually eat them.
All in all South Australia for us was just great and we were genuinely sad to leave.
