So we leave our comfortable pad, (in the form of Chris and Emily's cosy stylish home, just a hop across the water from Sydney) and head off on the start of our road trip from Sydney to Adelaide which would take us three days!  Now this is what we think Australia should look like. Red earth at the side of the road, stark trees and a breeze through the window that burns your nose if you breath in too deeply. The roads are long...without many a winding turn...Huge lorries rush past and in the distance there are dust devils. (small whirl winds created by the heat, dust and cross winds across the barren land) Unfortunately the only wildlife is laid quite still at the side of the road emitting pungent smells that alerts you to their plight, or featured on signs in the hope that you will be careful.

Each day brings with it a challenge to entertain ourselves, what we are going to eat and Nic developing the skill to map read...two out of three isn't bad? To conserve petrol and stay on budget we travel at an agonisingly slow 80km per hour and we are covering about 450km per day. This means that we spend about 7 hours a day thinking up games to pass the time. We have done the alphabet game.......this lasted a short while and then we ran out of ideas, so back to listening to music...this resulted in a joint effort of backing vocals to the big hit 'I need a hero' by Bonnie Tyler followed by 'Jumbaliye' the trendy ditty by Hank Williams! We are sooooo down with the kids!

On the third day we arrive in Adelaide, with a slight wildness in our eyes, and look at the map to revel in our accomplishment of distance traveled....only to find that we had done a minute amount of the distance we have yet to cover..... this country is truly HUGE!
