From Nairobi, we headed south into Maasi country of southern Kenya, northern Tanzania. The Maasi are mostly sheep & goat herdsman who wear bright red plaid blankets. Sometimes you see boys that are less than 10 years old with a herd of 20 or so cattle by the side of the road. I had a chance to walk around a Maasi cattle market where there were hunderds of cattle for sale and lots of Maasi men there to buy them. That evening, we saw the sunset against Mt Kilamanjaro - the highest mountain in Africa.

From Arusha, we had a fantastic two day safari in some 4 x 4 Land Rovers. The first stop was Ngorongoro Crater. This is basically it's own biosphere within a 20 km diameter crater. The small area contains plains, forests, salt & fresh water lakes and loads of animals - we saw lions, cheetahs, jackels, hyenas, wildebeasts, hippos, ostriches, birds, zebras, grand and thompsons gazelles, etc. A highlight was seeing the hyenas & jackels fight over a wildebeast carcass (probably left by one of the lions). Just outside the crater we saw an Elephant & a very small baby elephant underneath.

That evening, we drove to Serengeti National Park & saw one of the most beautiful sunsets ever. In this park, we saw all of the Ngorongoro animals plus giraffes, impalas, and crocodiles. A highlight here was a momma & 3 cheetah cubs. The mom chased & killed a thompsons gazelle & dragged it back to the babies. On a sad note, we saw a sickly hippo that had left the water to die in the hot sun, with birds attacking the poor animal.

Last night, there were 3 other overland trucks at our campground so everyone stayed up celebrating their fantastic safaris.
