I am helping with a kindergarten run by SOS. The children are fascinated by the white teacher. I finally put a hand on each of my fingers to hold hands with as many as I could. I want to help them along during a lesson, but teacher said the primary school wants them to be independent thinkers, so even at three they are expected to know things on their own.
I am teaching one of the teachers how to use the computer. The teachers have never even touched one. There is one in the old director's office that is running Windows 98 and is slower than Christmas, but they are so excited. We write each step down as we go.
I don't know if I will be able to take a picture to show you the conditions some of the villagers live in. I hope so because I cannot describe. I was bemoaning the conditions to my friends, and they said Haiti is MUCH worse. The help from the different organizations is wonderful, but it is just a drop in the bucket....more than just a money issue, but I don't know what the answer is.
Each teacher I have talked to mentions how rich America is, and how we have no problems. I say that we are not all rich. One teacher could not understand why we got mad at Bill Clinton for a moral error and like Bush who is so violent. She did not understand that I buy my clothes on sale and thinks I am fabulously wealthy, which I am seeing that I am. One thing we do have in common...grits!! They call it pappa here..it was much drier and served with beef.
