The Trutnov Music Festival was more music than festival, not in quantity, yet quality. Standard comments included, "you should have been here last year," and, "tomorrow night will be better." Apparently the good bands came on at 3am, we never managed to stay awake. We steered clear of the Hare-Krishna tent all-together, only to be dubbed as such while jingle-jangeling our newly bought castanets through the moonlit campsites in search of conversation. Our Czech is abysmal as was their understanding of our cola/redwine induced ideosyncratic converstaions. "We are from Mars and need space fuel for our journey home, do you know where we can find some?" After five minutes we would bumbled off, tripping giddily over tent guy-strings.

Trutnov, more of a festival with music than a music festival, seduced us four days into an uncertain decadence. The festival commenced with a choir kareoki of California Dreamin', followed by Satisfaction, and two-dozen other golden oldies, and ended once again with California Dreamin'. The Czech bands whom were around prior to the revolution of 1989 dominated the music scene, however they no longer need to change their band name before every gig nor try to appease the narks at the venue.

After questioning a dozen people about life under communism, we understood why the "freedom" iconography of the American 60's prevailed. Details of Czech life under communism: a banana for Christmas; work or jail; slander Stalin- go directly to Siberia do not pass Moscow do not collect vodka; wait 3 hours for a loaf of bread on Friday from 5 am, children collecting brochures from a tractor dealership because they're printed in color; and be a good communist and you may receive more bananas or perhaps just a b&w poster of bananas.
