After the amazing time we had exploring Komodo National Park via boat from Labuan Bajo, we hired a car to take us to explore the rest of Flores island.  This involved 4 days of the windiest roads I have ever been on.  The distance between Labuan Bajo and Maumere is about 260km, but is made up of about 550km of winding mountain roads.  We saw some great sites on this 4 days trip, including the spider web rice fields (The spider web pattern is from the way the field space was divided amongst a village.  The chief would stand in the middle of the field holding a stick, and each head of the household would then hold out a different number of fingers depending on the number of people in their household.  The distance of their fingers held out would indicate the amount of field they were allotted to farm - i.e. the more family members, the more field you got), some traditional villages, a green stone beach, and (my favourite) sunrise over the three-coloured lakes of Mt. Kelimutu.

One of the benefits of planning our trip as we go, is we are able to easily change our plan as we hear recommendations from fellow travellers.  One of the downsides is that things aren't always available on the dates you want them.  We were unaware that the month of June is a holiday in Indonesia, and therefore flights going back from Flores to the more populated parts of the country were hard to come by.  We had to wait a few days to find seats on a flight back to Bali (and on to Singapore).  Luckily Maumere has great beaches, and we found ourselves a little beach cabin to pass the time - so it was no real loss at all!

Here are some photos from our time in Flores:
