After a quick wander around the immediate area, I found "The Taylor Motel" on Government Street. Cheap, but wouldn't recommend it to anyone I know! Room was "clean" but could have done with a new coat of paint, flooring, having wiring concealed - or to be honest, just knocked down!
Ah the joys of travelling on the cheap!
Still, it was a bed, and a shower after another 7 hours on the Greyhound bus!
The next two days in Mobile had me wandering into town (an hour each way!) to see Fort Conde, a reconstruction of the original from the 17th century, the Mobile History Museum, a great little tour of the city on an old tram, and a visit to the WW2 battleship, the USS Alabama in the harbour..
Quite a beautiful downtown, but very quiet, with literally no nightlife (although I have been told it gets much better at the weekend!) - saved money on the beers I guess! Mobile was supposed to have had "Mardi Gras" about 10 years before it was even started in New Orleans, but unfortunately I didn't see much evidence of the party side of the place while I was there.
The people here were a bittie strange to be honest - well the ones that would talk to me! They also seem to be the worst drivers around, with almost every car I passed having some kind of dent or smash on it (no, I wasn't driving in Mobile!)
Anyway, heading off to Atlanta, Georgia now - more unplanned chaos to follow!
