I'm not quite sure what it is about me, but every single airport we hit I seem to get stopped for the security explosives checks... The tab gets brushed over my luggage and clothes before being checked in the machine... All good so far - fingers crossed after the mine site I don't end up checking positive on the machine!

Well. A really swift walk through Port Moresby Airport had Jason and I from the International Terminal to the Domestic and checking in to the next and final part of our travels - to Lihir Island. A 'short' 2-1/2 hr flight to the island on a twin prop 'Smartie Tube,' sure it'll be fine...

We arrive early evening on Lihir Island and were met by two of the company guys, Predrag and Gerald (a Croation and a Dutchman!)

The trip was actually very interesting, if at times a little scary. The photographs will give you an idea of the landscape on the island, a mix of the 'Lost' island and a great big building site.

The sky was always threatening to rain and when it did it was damn impressive - real tropical rain that seemed at one point during the night to be trying to bring the roof down on top of me.

After a tour of the island and the mine site with explanations on the operations (many tonnes of rock to get hardly any of gold... Sounds kinda labour intensive!)

The trip flew by (even with the presentations and difficult questions that had me slightly stressing on the Thursday!) and before I knew it my alarm was disturbing me again (at 3.30am! Which I should point out was 1.30am Perth time!) and I was off to the airport to start on the long journey home.

I'm sure I'll be back on Lihir again and will be a bit more confident about the trip - just have to watch out for those steam vents, malaria-bearing mozzies, landslides and crazy drivers (not probably in that order!)

18 hours of travel, here I come!

(PS Title reference - Tom Hank's film 1980's... Sorry!)
