Hello everyone!  Thanks for your thoughts and well wishes!!!  You are all awesome!!
It has become a little bit of a ritual where Kim reads the your messages and I smile broadly!!  Again thank you so much for following this...
Today I woke at 4am, got my bearings.  It felt like I slept for 10 hours but it was 5.5.  It was still dark so I turned on a light and started to anxiously/carefully survey the old bod.  Still hooked up to blood thinner IV (all intact, check).  Looked at the groin bandage... no blood visible (check), also to ensure they performed the right surgery!!.  Everything still there (check).  Utilized the bedpan because I had earlier proclaimed myself an expert (check...still am!).
I began to wonder what if any changes I could recognize.  Immediately my fingers had more sensation, and could feel all toes moving.  I'm in a lot of pain (finally I'm a pain in my own neck!!) and back/chest.  I smiled a little and then tried to get back to sleep and then night shift Inga came in to draw blood.  I tried to say no thank you,  alas that was met with "DA"!!  As per her word she returned in 10 minutes and frowned that I had not eaten dinner from last night. 2 orderlies came in and removed the groin bandage and replaced it with a bandage (no bleeding issues).  Windows open for no reason.
Then the operating physician and 2 other interns showed up for the post op check.  Started with questions and then out came the doppler ultrasound.  The surgeon was speaking without translating and then this was worrisome as I was left to scan their expressions.  the surgeon then stuck a couple English words in, must have been for my benefit... good, nice.
He then turned to me and said you need to sit up for the rest of the test.  I said well... how are the veins?   He said "but of course they are wide open and flowing".  5% narrowed...not 90% Relief!!!
I little more conversation about different things and Canada.  He asked what is the biggest lake and I wasn't sure so I gave him the 5 biggest and he said he would like to come to Canada and swim with me.  I said why not move and be a physician in Sask?  They all laughed but in their eyes the wheels were turning.  Doc and Kim's liberation and physician recruitment services!!  Nice ring to it.

Kim 100% Rocks!!!  He showed up this morning and brought the computer, hence the update.  Although we have more ahead, he is/has been a rock!!  Thank you!!   He is the life of the 6th floor.  He goes room to room and now has a million friends.  I ask him to describe the 'outside' world and ask for every detail and he enthusiastically obliges.  Anyone ever need the assistance, companionship, and relief with the complete understanding that everything is going to be....ok...
Book him!!!   How does one repay his selflessness and then everyone else that made this trip possible?  Sheesh...talk about gratitude

Hi guys
I was having dinner with my parents last night. With a big smile I said to my Mom "when this treatment works, this will not be about Doc...it will be about him getting this treatment through for everyone else." Know we are all with you 100% of the way to make that happen. Also giggling, I said "and Kim will be bringing Street Culture to Bulgaria" looks like the Street Culture surgeons are being courted already! Rock on.

I am glad thinks are well this morning I copied the blog and took it too Christina. She had tears of joy for you Doc as most of have. I am even more preoccupied at work checking this blog for tidbits of info. Docbook is definitely more addicting than that of thing.

Stephen Hall on

Of course you're on CBC! Makes perfect sense to me... You guys are both in the business of making a difference so it stands to reason!

Congrats on the early signs of surgery success Doc. We look forward to hearing and seeing more. Take good care.

Heh Walter & Kim, You two are definitely a "Dynamic Duo"! I am sending positive vibes your way and I will continue to check the blog regularly for updates. Is the coffee any good there Mark?

Yay for open and flowing!!! Kim, you are a Liberation Doula: you could train other medical companions! Sounds as though their system has retained much more of the humanity, something that we need to bring back!!! It amazes me the detachment that i have seen from nurses, doctors, techs, even at an event like a birth! crazy people! Sounds like you are getting excellent care from everyone there! but dude, EAT!! Hope the pain doesn't last long, and you will soon be out testing your new circulation! Glued to the blog my friends!

I somehow feel that that hospital is going to remember the team of Kim and Doc for some time! ;) This is turning out to be quite a journey for all of us who support you Doc. Kim, you are doing what you do best.... I miss you! Sending my warmest thoughts .....like so many others here. I can just imagine all those wonderful wishes and good thoughts travelling over the big pond to Bulgaria! When do you get up and walk, Doc? Looking forward to the progress reports! Take good care guys! Kim.........123

We're all happy to hear that you're doing well Doc. Keep the updates coming, and best wishes from all of us at 1863 Cornwall.

Much Love,

Hey Doc,

SO happy to hear that things are going at least as well as hoped, so far! Rhodes just called to say he heard you on the CBC so I'll tune in later to catch the repeat.

I will assume that you and Kim will get around to eating something today and that the pain will gradually recede as well. Did Kim get any photos of your shaved package? I expect there will be big demand for that shot, if he did. If he didn't, I suggest you get one taken...

Super cool that you experienced some immediate improvement - that must have been pretty exciting. Look forward to hearing more from you guys. In the meantime, I'll relay the good news around to your friends in Halifax.

Awesome, awesome, awesome...

Hi Lori,

Kim here. It's very early in the morning and Doc's still sawing logs. All is well here.

Regarding your interest about the CBC story - here's the link http://www.cbc.ca/video/player.html?category=News&zone=canada&site=cbc.news.ca&clipid=1553333838

also, if you scroll down and find an entry from a woman named 'Tania', she also has two links there of stories.

Enjoy the read - if you click on the entry called 'fundraising' and go forward from there you may also discover some other articles people allude to.

Kindest regards,
Kim Sutherland in Sofia, Bulgaria
