After the 3 weeks at Yolitia working every day, we thought weīd treat ourselves to a few days by the sea.
Turns out that the beaches here arenīt up to much - in fact, they all had a curious smell of sewage, and no-one on them. After a 6 mile walk on the first day - "thereīs got to be a nice busy beach just around that corner", but never finding one, we scrapped the whole beach idea, but enjoyed the city a lot. We had just missed Mexicos biggest carnival (by 3 days), so i guess we were in Veracruz for the aftermouth...
Took a trip to San Juan De Ulua, which was a stunning fort / prison / castle. The place wasnīt really restored much, so had loads of old charm, small courtyards, dark cobbled rooms and endless amounts of arches. THe only thing spoiling it was that someone had decided it ws OK to build a huge industrial port right the way around the fort - so nearly every view had a bright yellow crane hanging in the background.
Another day we took a tour to a place creatively called "little Cancun", which promised snorkelling and a tour of a near-by island...
Little Cancun turned out to be a miniscule sand bank with about 40 tourists hanging around on it waiting to leave. Snorkelling in the sewage-riddeled water was pretty fruitless. Still, it was entertaining and we felt we should do something to do with the sea after travelling 400km to go there!
There were loads of cool plazas and roads throughout Veracruz and in the nights these filledup with street performers and Mexicans, and had a really relaxed vibe about them. One night we sat plaza-side and watched a live salsa band do their thing and the local old people dancing. Put us to shame watching octarians who were better dancers than we could ever imagine being. Needless to say, we didnīt want to be shown up by them, so we stayed rooted to the table and fresh Red Snapper.
