Flag of Bolivia  , Potosi Department,
Friday, May 31, 2013

Usually we're required to get up ridiculously early to catch buses to our next location, but as Potosi is only 3 hours away we 'treated' ourselves and left midday after a nice lay in. Annoyingly the one day we had in Potosi turned out to be a bank holiday, so everything was shut, the whole place was a ghost town. We spent our time walking very slowly and still managing to be out of breath. I don't think we will ever get used to this altitude. I got lucky though and found the most epic, tasty dinner ever in South America. Lomo montado (beef steak, fried egg, chips, salad), a massive portion and actually cooked properly. I still dream about it to this day....After a day of nothing in Potosi we headed to Tupiza. This required an early get up made even more unpleasant thanks to the bitter cold. Its getting towards winter here and at 4100masl, running naked to a shared bathroom across an open courtyard for a shower at 6am is not fun! The 7 hour bus ride was good though with great views of more spectacular Bolivian scenery and this time reminding is of films from the wild west!
Tupiza is a small town in what seems like the middle of nowhere, the reason for our visit is; 1 to see the surrounding countryside and 2 to do the salt flats tour. Most people do a salt flats tour from Uyuni a town 7 hours north west from here however the tours lack quality from what we've heard and they're only 3 days as opposed to 4 from Tupiza. We went straight to La Torre, a great hostel/hotel who also offered tours. After we checked in we met 2 other English girls, Catherine and Lara, who had also been on the bus here and wanted to do a tour starting the next day. After having the tour explained in detail we decided to join up and the 4 of us would be exploring the South West in a jeep for 4 days. For our 1300bob (130) each we got a driver/cook/sleeping bag/accommodation/transport and food.
