Hello Everyone
Well me and Peter had made it to Irkutsk alive and well(ish) and we have sorted our train tickets to Ulan Bator (Mongolia) so we can final relax and enjoy the last week or so in Russia.
Anyways, to recount the last 96 hours.
On the 7th Aug, we caught the train from Yekaterinburg to Novosibirsk. Time was mostly spent reading books, worrying about buying train tickets to Ulan Bator, playing cards and talking to a young lad in our cabin. As soon as we said we were from Manchester, he instantly said Manchester United. Seriously we cant escape them! We talked for a while, even though he spoke no English and us, not much Russian!
Anyways we arrived in Novosibirsk on the 8th Aug at ~14:30, giving us little time to look around. Turns out there isn't alot in Novosibirsk. High lights included the Siberian railway museum, which had some cool things and an awesome model railway. Some random Church's around the city were also fairly cool but most were closed due to weddings! We went to a local studies museum which stuff about the shamans who live in Siberia, very cool.
After that came the worst nights sleep ever. We became true backpackers as we slept in the train station on the benches! Pretty uncomfortable but i managed 2 hours before being awakened by the guards who didn't want anyone to sleep for some reason! During the night, we spoke to an American who had spent several months in Tomsk (off the tans-sib track) and in the morning some blokes from Uzbekistan. They spoke little English but instantly knew of Man United after telling them where we were from!
The train from Novosibirsk to Irkutsk finally came at 10:30am. Considering we hadn't slept alot (or atall in some cases) we slept most of the train ride arriving in Irkutsk on the 10th Aug at 20:30ish. During that time, we chatted to the couple in our cabin. The girl was from the Black Sea area and the guy from around Irkutsk. He used to be in the army apparently (looked like a guy you wouldn't want a fight with!). Regardless, they were very nice.
Anyways, we are safely in Irkutsk, trains and buses all organized for the next several days so next update will be in a few days.
Hope everyone is well and okay
Mark and Peter
