In the late 1970's I traveled through Afghanistan on several occassions. Of course, this once fascinating land succumbed to almost thirty years of war and devastation, driving many of its inhabitants into exhile. The photos here are of people who most probably no longer live in Afghanistan. Many, I'm sure, are no longer alive today. Nonetheless, their images live on from a country that was, not too long ago, a magical place for travelers to visit, and live.

Hi Marjorie and Paul,

I travelled to Afghanistan 18 months ago and took some pictures a bit like yours.I was surprised to see you had some of Kandahar,which I would have considered too dangerous to visit now,until I realised yours were taken in the 1970's.
Nevertheless,they are very nice pictures and surprising quality for the age.Can you explain how what were presumably old prints have digitalised so well?My site is called WANDERINGSTAR.iT WOULD BE NICE TO HEAR FROM YOU.
