On tour with the GAP group: three Canadians (including guide), two Swiss, three Americans, two Australians (including me) and one Norwegian. We crossed the murky waters of the Rio de Plata, which divides Argentina and Uruguay and spent some time in the beautiful, cobble-stoned town of Colonia before heading onto the capital, Montevideo. For some reason (siesta or economic slowdown) all the shops and museums in the city centre were closed when we arrived. I was standing by myself, looking a bit non-plussed, outside the museum of contemporary art when a local came up to explain the opening hours. 'Danny the DJ' didn't start work til midnight so he took me around the town, ending up at his family's resturant on the beach for lunch...I had found yet another South American who is passionate about rugby, so we discussed George Gregan, Jonah Lomu....Wallabies vs All Blacks etc etc...Headed out on the town that night with the GAP crew after an awesome meal at an italian restaurant. The city had been totally dead at 3pm. At 3am there were streams of people flowing in and out of bars, down the narrow streets. And the next morning it was as if it had never happened. Everything shut up, streets deserted. Interesting place.
