Once you're past the construction south of Tahlequah, Hwy 82 and 64 to Sallisaw are hilly, curvy and beautiful. It was a windows-down, blues-on-the-iPod kind of drive (Stevie Ray Vaughan, Albert Cummings, Neko Case).

I had to bypass Spiro for now since the Indian Mounds were closed. Of course.

I'm spending a few days in Poteau, happily. The Days Inn is very nice, and you can't beat a real (non-slinky) mattress every now and then! After a big lunch of veggies (few and far between on the road, I'm finding), I spent a wonderful afternoon wandering up and down the only downtown street, Dewey. It's obvious they're fighting the fast food, chain store, highway battle right next door, just like many small towns. They've got two very nice antique stores, a little quilt shop, a couple of nice places to eat. etc.

I made my first major purchase, an amazing silver bracelet. According to the hand stamp, HB, it was made by Harvey Begay or Harrison Bitsui, both Navajo. (Still Googling for info.) Wayne and Kay, the store owners, purchased the bracelet and other items north of Flagstaff, Arizona; they were dead pawn, or items that were pawned but never picked up. Regardless, it's obviously handmade of thick silver (they think from coins) and beautiful stones. I've never been one for blue turquoise, but this slightly-green color is just wonderful. www.peppercornantiquemall.com

Wayne took me on a tour of the building he's renovating and turning into a museum and historical center. It, and he, was so interesting! I loved hearing about the history of the building, which was a hotel and restaurant, cafe and soda fountain. The intricate tile work in each bathroom was beautiful, and laid in the days when they did each piece individually.

I regret it every time I don't have my camera, so I may have to repeat some of this tomorrow to get a few shots...
