Tuesday, September 11 2012

It's impossible to start this day without thinking of all those who lost their lives on September 11th. They were true American heroes and we honor their memory today.

We woke up today at the Nature Inn in Bald Eagle State Park.  The foggy mist was all over the lake and rising into the trees.  On the far side of the lake I was able to spot a bald eagle through the Nature Inn provided binoculars.  The lobby here has a computer setup just for guests to record bird sightings.  They also have a nature oriented library. There is a lovely breakfast room overlooking the lake and we started the day here with a hearty breakfast.

After breakfast we loaded our day packs and cameras into the Rav4 and headed west to Benezette.  This is Elk County and home to Pennsylvania's only elk herd.  In October 2010 an Elk County Visitors Center was constructed, so we made a stop there.  It is an impressive structure with nice architecture.  Inside there are informative nature displays, a gift shop and a theatre.

The elk can be seen from the visitors center and from various viewing areas in the surrounding area.  This was not our first visit to the area, and the last time we visited, we found a large herd in the area.  This time, however, we were not so lucky. It was probably due to our midday visit, which is not a popular time for elk to be in sight.

After our return to The Nature Inn, we took a short walk and relaxed on the balcony,
