On Saturday my friend and favorite bird guide, Jack, arrived in Reykyavik.  We had made the plan to meet and spend three weeks exploring Iceland looking for birds.  My main wish was to see Puffins, his to see the Gyr Falcon.  With our rental car we would circle the island and see what we could see.  But first we had a day in Reykyavik so we decided to walk around a bit.  Well, just on that walk we saw.....birds!  Almost all new to me!  Wow!  We walked around a lake where we saw Whooper Swans, Greylag Geese, Tufted Ducks, Common Eiders and Arctic Terns...a nice beginning.

Monday morning we picked up the rental car (very convenenient: right at the hotel), and headed out to explore the rest of the island.  The main road in Iceland is the Ring Road which encircles the island and our plan was to follow that circle and make sidetrips off it to various birding areas, islands, volcanoes, geysers, etc.  Our first stop that day would be somewhere on Snæfellnes Peninsula, about 150 Km. from Reykyvik.
