Sat 26th January 'Australia Day'
Varkala - pop 43,000 situated along the edge of cliffs with a fantastic vista of the sparkling blue/green Arabian Sea.
We are staying at a 2/3 star hotel with a pool approx 200m back from the cliffs. This beach at Varkala has treacherous currents and rips and is one of the most dangerous beaches in Kerala but it still doesn't stop the tourists from swimming.
Yesterday we hopped on a local bus and travelled north to an Elephant Festival. It took us 2 hrs to get there, then we only had an 1 hr there before we had to come back again. Hundreds of swarming Indians, men, women, children and babies paid homage to their Hindu Gods. The scenario was wonderfully chaotic, noisy and colorful.
Tomorrow we leave early for Cape Comorin the most southern point of India.
