We left Goa early in the morning driving 400 km east to Hampi in the state of Karnataka. As we neared Hampi giant boulders appeared on the landscape offset by palm trees, rice paddy fields, paw-paw and banana groves. We stayed at the Shanthi Guest House which was really a number of concrete circular huts with thatched roofs.
A world heritage site Hampi is a major stop on the travelling circuit and is renowned for its ruins on the banks of the tungabhadra river which reflects the glory of a bygone era from the medieval period when the Vijayanagara empire was run by powerful kings in a succession of dynasties in the 12C.
The old Pavillions and Temples were about 5kms away so we walked down to the Tungabhadra river, caught a boat to the other side where we hired Tuk Tuks and scooters for the day.

Thurs, 17th Jan Day 40.

We are now on our way south to Mysore where we will spend 2 nights. It's going to be another long 12 hr day+ to drive the 400kms as the road is narrow and rough. At the moment most people are either asleep, reading or listening to their iPods or playing 500.
