We left Denali National Park at 4pm on the Alaska RailRoad and arrived in the Fairbanks Depot at 830pm. What beautiful scenery from Denali to Fairbanks. We spotted Dall Sheep on the Mountain top and a Moose with her calf on the way. The fall colors were beautiful. The weather was great-no rain and the train ride was so much fun, The shuttle met us at the depot for our weeks stay at the Pikes. We had reserved the riverview room with balcony and we loved the accomodations. What a great place to stay. We decided to go to the bar at the hotel and get something to eat and relax a little after our day. The following day we woke up to clear skies and cool weather. Carol from Adventure car rentals picked us up at the hotel with our rental and what a great car she had for us. I had reserved a small Ford but she upgraded it to a Kia Sorento and we loved it. Tommy loved it and was very comfortable. After breakfast at the hotel we went driving around and ended up at the University of Fairbanks Museum of the North. That was very educational and the area around the University is beautiful. We thought we would go back to the Pikes and walk around and watch some football but football games start at 8am and the evening game ends early but we did relax and enjoy our day. WE ate more Halibut at the Pikes Landing Restaurant. Our first day in Fairbanks was great That night we left a wakeup call for the Northern Lights but still no lights.
Sept 15 we woke up to a beautiful day. We had The Riverboat discovery tour scheduled for 1pm that afternoon. We spent the morning relaxing and then went to the Riverboat. It was a great excursion . We saw a demo of floatplane landing and taking off,and demo of the sled dogs and an Indian Village tour. It was a great afternoon. We decided to take a drive to the Murphy Dome Road, We were told that the drive was beautiful and the top of the Road would be a great place to watch the lights. It was a beautiful drive and the colors were spectacular in the afternoon light. After we reached the top there was a group of hunters that had killed 2 Moose on Friday and it had taken them until Monday afternoon to get it out. They had the animal loaded but we had to take pictures of the Moose. I wish we could have seen a Moose that size while we were in alaska/ The Moose weighed over 2,000lbs. A gigantic animal. The afternoon was great but the evening was better than we could have ever have imagined. WE were told that the night would be a good night for the Northern Lights so we could hardly wait to see them Around 9pm the first line of Lights were showing but they came and went We went outside and another band of light was showing around 10pm. A group of us were outside in awe of the lights and we were all trying to get pictures of the lights. The lights started dancing around in the sky and we were mesmerized by them. WE watched for awhile then went to the room and watched from the balcony. The lights were very active that night, There were some other people watching from their balcony and when the lights went dancing again one man from Russia started screaming and jumping around on the grass saying it was a miracle. And I think it was. What a wonderful way to end the day. WE will never forget the sight and we are so thankful that we were able to experience the colors in the lights.
Tuesday we decided to check out DownTown Fairbanks. We went to the Ice Museum, the visitor center and other shops in town. We had a good time and then decided to go to the famous Fred Meyer store. That afternoon we decided to take a drive to the North Pole Alaska and see Santa Clause House. Yes Virginia there really is a Santa Clause. That place is a great place to visit. The drive was so beautiful with the fall colors. We decided to make it an early evening and went back to the Pikes.. Our room overlooked the Chena River and we really enjoyed looking out at the river. In the winter the River freezes over and they use it to drive on.
