The fantastic view! The sunshine! The clean air! I loved Corfu, clear and simple. It was like I breathed again after a 5 weeks of holding my breath. The balcony of the hostel overlooked the ocean, a stunning bay with a sandy beach. I was in heaven.

So I stayed. I was too happy to leave, and with dinner included in my cost (pretty good Greek food too), I decided I needed to rest before continuing my hectic days on the rails. I intended staying for 3 nights, and ended up staying for 6. Much of this was passed idly, lying on the beach, reading a book, chatting with the people I met there (2 Canadians and 3 Australians, with whom I became friends). It was just fantastic to sit back and relax for a few days.

One day the Canadians and I rented a car and explored the island (after all, canīt sit around every day, now can we?). We took a little boat trip around Paleokastritsa, to see the caves that you canīt reach from land. At one place I saw a similar effect to that at the Blue Grotto in Capri. I was entranced.

One inhabitant of the hostel was the grandmother. She reminds me of the old lady in My Big Fat Greek Wedding, for those of you who have seen it. Her role at the place consists of sitting around, staring daggers and any passer-by and hacking up bile every so often. A charming lady.

The younger boy of the couple who run the place was a menace. He had a weird love for throwing stuff off the balcony, so I had to keep a good eye on my belongings to keep from them learning to fly rather suddenly. My book still ended up being chucked though, in a moment of distraction. He would then proceed to run around the balcony for approximately 2 hours. Just running. And when he was finished, he might break a glass of two for good measure. I thought the Greeks only broke plates.

The place really gave me a second breath for the rest of my trip.
