Where I stayed
Vernal KOA
What I did
Flaming Gorge Dam
Today was mostly an inbetween day, as the stretch from Jackson to Moab is too far to do in one day. We drove through Flaming Gorge National Recreation Area, where the rocks are incredibly red. The scenery changed pretty dramatically soon after leaving Jackson, and became rather Karoo-like. We could definitely tell we were heading for the desert.
We stopped at the Flaming Gorge Dam and did a tour of it, as we were there and they were about to do one. It's pretty huge, and river looks like a tiny ribbon down below.
On the way to Vernal, Utah, we had some fun looking up odd laws. Utah is pretty much ruled by Mormons, and there is a very strong Mormon presence. The churches along the roadside changed almost instantly to Latterday-Saints the moment we crossed the state line. Remarkable. We found some amusing laws - a man is liable for any crime his wife commits in his presence (handy), a woman may not fish on her own on a Sunday (or something like that, anyway) and other such oddities. It was becoming increasingly warm - hot times ahead!
The campsite in Vernal is quite nice - we had a very large grassy space to ourselves, so could spread out a bit. There was also a nice swimming pool, which we happily used since there was nothing else to do.
