The journey to Danau Toba was scenic all the way and the bus brought me to the town of Parapat which is on the edge of lake Toba. Myself and Simon jumped on a ferry that takes about 40 mins to get over to the Samosir island in the middle of the lake.. Now this lake is massive and the island in the middle (Samosir) is as big as Singapore which is pretty dam big.. the island and lake were formed from a volcano so technically this island is in the middle of the crater so its all dead scenic and surrounded by mountains. The main area to stay in is called Tuk Tuk. The temperature here is mush cooler than Medan or the rest of Asia for that matter as you are at an elevation of 950m. Anyway we got booked into Lekjon cottages which is rite on the lake and was an absolute steal at 2 cuid a nite for the room i had.. balcony over looking the lake and all that jazz. Was funny the guy Johan who was checking us in was nodding and winking saying anything at all u need while your here.... he can get.. now in thailand or vietnam that would mean a hooker in america it would mean towels or room service but here it means weed which grows all over the island or magic mushrooms... Magic mushroom omlettes and shakes are on half the menus in restaurants here too....lol

This time of year there are very few tourists about which was kinda cool. I have to say that the people in Indonesia are by far the friendliest and warmest i have met so far in Asia. The staff in the cottages were a great laugh and hung out with myself and simon most of the time. In some tourist places u will see tourists asking a local if they can take their picture.. here on my first day 4 locals on bikes stop beside me and take turns of geting pictures with me.. and then took off on their bikes again.. totally weird.

I pretty much relaxed here for about 5 days, Playing pool and cards drinking and swimming in the lake which is clean and clear and warm..ish. Tuk Tuk is small enough to walk about and its pretty cool, there is no traffic at all here so its dead quiet. One of the days myself and simon rented motorbikes..4 chuid each with a full tank of petrol for the day...no helmut or no insurance though.. but all good fun. So we drove the bikes doing a loop about the island and hitting these natural hot springs and a scenic view from the top of Tele a village about 50 km away. Did drive my bike into the ditch there to avoid a truck and the throttle stuck on me so added a few nice scratches to my feet and legs but was kinda better than going over the cliff on other side of road... starting to think i may need insurance after all.

We were still coming back when a thunderstorm hit us and we got soaked through with rain. The roads got flooded too so was kinda interesting driving these bikes through the floods when u cant even see the road beneath you. Well funny though and eventually made it back to the cottages where everyone was pissing themselves laughing at the state of us. We had a BBQ with the staff one of the days and the rest of the guests.. 5 of us total. food was always really good and beer Bintangs is the only drink the sell.

I still didnt really know what direction i was going in when leaving here.. i was originally planning on heading north and using my return ticket to Penang from Medan but i decided to head south to Bukittinggi by bus.. I have already changed my flight date from singapore to New Zealand 4 times now.. but as plan stood i was going back to penang traveling more of malaysia doing xmas in singapore and flying outa there to NZ on december 28th. My new idea... decided over a pool game with simon was to head south to Bukittinggi, then fly from there to jakarta and fly from there to Bali for xmas and new years in some island there and then fly from Bali back to KL in Malaysia.. So my original idea of coming to Indonesia for 5 days has snowballed into a 29 day visit and not even going to see the one place i had planned on coming too...lol

They say the bus is 14 hours but it could be anything up to 30 hours as the roads are so dodgy. So left Danu Toba on the 13th of december for Parapat to catch a bus from there to Bukittinggi just below the Equator.... will add photos soon computers too slow here to bother trying to do it
