So as i was saying coming to indonesia is a bonus.. i had never planned to but i got the notion to come after reading up more about a place in sumatra while i was on the slow boat in Laos. Anyway i got the ferry at one and met an english couple and an irish guy on the boat. the ferry took 5 hours and was pretty smooth, it showed Casino Royal on the way which was the worst pirate copy i have ever seen, but i tried not to watch it as i still wanna see it in cinema if possible. Paid the $25 for the 30 day visa at the port of Belawan and got the bus into the city of Medan with Eugene the other irish lad. We checked into the Ibunda hotel which was very plush and a lot nicer than my previous nites accomadation which was a poxy kip. Anyway hit the ATM to get some funny money..(millionaire again)and ate in the hotel restaurant which was good. The waiter brought me into the kitchen to pick out a dish to eat as they hadnt got what i ordered so what came out was bloddy good anyway. Up in the morning and hit a travel office place to get a bus ticket. I should mention Medan is a big ass city with a few million people but its very dirty and polluted and the city's main attraction is a mosque which was just down from our hotel so managed to visit that and honestly wasnt really looking to stick about any longer.
I wanted to get a bus to go to Bukit Lawang which is 100km north of the city and you can see Orangutans in the jungle there and go tubeing on the river. Anyway the area was badly flooded a few years ago.. (news to me) and there were no buses going and as i didnt wanna stay in Medan any longer i jumped on another bus heading for Danau Toba an hour later. I met Simon an english guy heading there too waiting at the bus office. The usual crazy roads and traffic apply here too cars, trucks and bikes all driving the wrong way up a dual carrigeway and our mini bus weaving in and out to avoid them.. none of this surprises me anymore and im sitting in the front of the mini bus and not a sniff of a seatbelt. Only a four hour journey anyway so not too bad.
