From Dunedin we picked up the Southern Scenic Route, recommended by many and driven on by even more Maui vans. We get everywhere. We made a few stops on our way to Te Anau.

The Petrified Forest was our favourite, save the threat of sandfly attack; a whole forest frozen in time from 160 million years ago. I had to touch the tree stumps and branches for my eyes to realise that the wood had turned to stone. The waves lapped up on to this ancient stone forest and newer features like yellow eyed penguins, sea lions and tourists shared the coastline. With one watchful and very kind ranger making sure nobody decided to go and pet the sea lion.
