Marcelo and I were advised by Kate to visit the Blue mountains, in particular Katoomba to see the 3 sisters. We set off by train (it's about 100km from Sydney), with back packs full of snacks and drinks, our cameras, and not much idea of what we were going to do or see.
Katoomba is referred to as the most populous city in the Blue Mountains. To me, with 8000 inhabitants it is merely a very small town. It is quaint though, and has a strangely British feel to it. Probably because it caters to many British tourists and backpackers.
They have one of those big red tourist buses to take you to all the famous sites, but Marcelo and I like to do things the hard way, if we have the time. We walked to the canyon, it took us about 20 minutes. We were greeted with breathtaking views, and beautifully clear weather (which we found out later was quite fortunate as the area is known for it's mist and low lying clouds). We walked around the canyon to the Fuber Steps, made our way down the cliff, and then took the Federal Pass (2.5km walk) until we reached the Giant Stairway, which we climbed up to the 3 sisters. It was an invigorating day's rambling. It can be accomplished with a lot less effort as a company operates a cable car to cross the canyon and a cliff side railway if you climb down one side and don't want to climb back up the other.
This blog is a real nature lovers one.
