Halibut Cove, Alaska

Carla wanted to ensure we were well entertained as she is the perfect hostess, and we are very grateful for her kindness in acting as our tour guide, and treating us to a day out at Halibut Cove. We drove to Homer, a must visit destination for those with a camper van. It was originally populated because of coal mining in the area but has become known as the halibut fishing capital of the world. If you imagine Alaskan colonial settlements, what you visualize - Homer pretty much is, with a tourist streak running through it. We caught the Danny J ferry, which takes about an hour and a half to sail over to Halibut Cove. It passes by Gull Island, with it's vast populations of nesting sea birds. Halibut Cove is a little enclave with a population of about 90 during the summer months, which drops to about 20 during the harsh months of winter when it is cut off from the main land. Any way my photos have a lot of historical descriptions, and I hope you do enjoy them.
