We spent a couple of weeks with the wonderful Murphy family. My mum and Jacquie were friends as children in Canada and about 15 years ago we reconnected with them. Andrew and Ashleigh are around the same age as my brother Lindsay and I. They were the perfect hosts and we felt like were staying with family. Marcelo made a few dishes on request and Ashleigh made us several Ceaser's to drink with Clamato juice, tabasco, Worcestershire sauce, celery  salt and a celery stick. Yum!
I have to say I spent a lot of time in doors working on my blog. We did manage to visit gas town, Granville Island Public Market, which we walked to. It was quite a substantial walk and there are some great stalls to visit there.

We enjoyed the Vancouver Canada Day celebrations. We watched the parade which was unusual as it really had very little I would call Canadian. A lot of Asian cultures were celebrated though, which is fine. I enjoyed the multiculturalism expressed which was representing Canada as being a country of immigrants. However, I felt that Canada is something more than just it's constituent parts. It isn't just Asian culture, Ukranian culture etc mixed together in the same city. It has made something new and uniquely Canadian, a new culture gained by becoming Canadian, and I felt that was not very well expressed.
Representing Canada we had the traffic police, the bin men, the Sherriff...and a few other random things.  No ice hockey players or mounted mounties or Native Americans (First Nation or Inuit). These things may be a bit cliche but at the same time they are distinctly Canadian. I don't mean to give offense saying these things. It's just how we felt watching the parade. We enjoyed ourselves though.

Where Jacquie lives is very close to the harbour, so we had a 2 minute walk down to see the fireworks in the evening which was fun.
Our last day, we joined Andrew and his girlfriend Sherreff Kayaking in the bay. It was a beautiful day and we saw a seal. What a nice way to end our wonderful visit.
