Flag of Costa Rica  , San José,
Tuesday, May 1, 2012

Costa Rica was a short but sweet trip. We stayed in San Pedro, close to San Jose and actually travelled by public transport to get there most of the way which was really not a hassle during the day, though if we had arrived late i wouldn't have done it.

The hostel was wonderful (I've written and tagged a review of it on this page). It was the best hostel we've stayed in. Not for party animals though, it is a relaxing haven after a stressful day.

As our stay was to be so short, we planned 2 tours, one for each day. The first was Zip lining through the rainforest and straight on to whitewater rafting and the second was visiting the Arenal Volcano and enjoying it's naturally heated water at the Tabacon hot springs.

We had 2 fantastic days. Loved the zip lining, though you must watch out for bullet ants. They are about an inch long and have a nasty bite and sting (apparently worse pain than a scorpion sting but it is harmless) and they live on the trees we were zip lining in, and the poison dart frogs, of which we saw one called 'blue jeans' as his body is red but legs are blue. I have added some videos of the zip line.
The white water rafting was great fun - level 2 and 3 rapids, and Marcelo's first time doing it. We don't have any pics of us on he rapids as when we were I was paddling for my life rather than taking pictures.
We were lucky as the only others on the tour were a Ukranian couple who live in Georgia, so we made good friends with them and had a very personal tour as we could chat with the guides.
When asked why he was bringing a pineapple on the boat our whitewater rafting guide told us that it was to give to the natives who live in the rainforest in exchange for the use of the river. If we didn't give it to them they may shoot us with poison darts. He had us all sucked in for just a second.

The second day was the Arenal Volcano, which was like a 4 hour drive there and back. We stopped at a rest stop with a hummingbird garden, while Marcelo had his camera fixated on the water feeder, a hummingbird landed on my hand (I think it was my ring glinting in the sunlight that attracted him) and he stayed there a good minute or so. I managed to get Marcelo's attention without scaring it off and we got a few good pics of it. The tabacon hot springs are situated at the base of the active Arenal volcano in lush rainforest. They are forme of little streams, rivers, waterfalls and pools of varying temperatures surrounded by dense vegetation, flowers and little lizards everywhere. Later on in the day it started to rain and the cool rain complemented the hot water we were relaxing in perfectly.
We made good friends with a few people on our tour and hope to continue to stay in touch with them.
