We got out and parked our car in free parking next to the station, reclined our seats and dozed off. Next morning, we had to get the tank fueled up to the brim otherwise we would be penalized for at twice the cost of the fuel. We got up early to locate the fuel station only to find out that on Saturdays nobody mans them and only a card with a chip will work. We tried several pumps but with same result. After burning a bit more fuel, we decided to cut our losses and return the car anyways. We went to the airport and dropped it off. We took the next train out and reached Irun.
We were hoping to return the car in the evening and then catch a train to take us towards Madrid. We were so wrong. We reached the drop point at the airport around 11 pm and to our horror the airport had closed down for the day. All gates were locked. I never thought that they shut down airports at night. Imagine someone needing to land in emergency. But that was besides the point. We had a bigger problem to deal with - parking the car overnight and finding a place to stay. Nevertheless, we thought a couple of pints would do us no harm. So we went down to a nearby pub and sipped some beer. Next up we hopped to another one where there was a karaoke thing going on. I was drunk enough to go up to the jockey and ask him for a list of English songs available. There were hardly any but I got one of my personal favourites "Stairway to heaven" and started singing. As the song began to pick up tempo the crowd too joined in and it was a wonderful feeling. We then went to the beach and spent a few minutes there only to reach a conclusion that we should go to the railway station to check about the trains for tomorrow. We reached the station only to find out that the next train would take us to Irun and from there we can get another one to Madrid.
