Sunday 20th July

We were fast approaching the Yellowstone area and began thinking about what day we would be arriving there. We felt that it may be better not to go near the weekend because of the crowds so we had to start planning our trip for the next few days.

We drove to Buffalo, Wyoming before realising we had a made a bit of a mistake not re-fuelling and shopping in Gillette, which was back down the I 90.  Buffalo is not a big town but all the traffic to Yellowstone heads out through this route and it is a long drive up through mountains until you get to Cody and then Y.Stone. Fuel was ridiculously expensive in Buffalo - about 50 cents a gallon more than we had seen in Gillette! We were mad with ourselves, especially as we needed food too. We haven't made too many errors like this one so far.

So we decided to continue heading north to Sheridan, where we could shop at Walmart and buy fuel at a half-way decent price. Then we headed west over the Big Horn Mountains and closer to Yellowstone. Boy it's a remote place out here!

As we climbed into the National Forest up in the Mountains we darted off the road near the top and down a gravel road with a number (which means National Forest Access and camping for free).

We drove for a few miles before we arrived in a beautiful clearing with a stream and a lovely shady spots for camping. There were a few other people in tents etc but that was no problem.  We set up camp by the stream and apart from terrible mosquitoes and flies it was great!

After dinner we biked up the road further in the fading light to do a bit of animal spotting. The first animal we spotted was a MOOSE! It was feeding on grass in an open meadow not very far from us. We then spotted a WOLF in the grass which trotted around a bit before disappearing into the trees. We also saw deer. So that was all very exciting. It was pretty much dark by the time we got back.
