Wednesday 9th July

We drove out of Michigan today and into Indiana after an hour or so on the beach in Holland. There was a strong breeze blowing off the lake which kept it a bit cool so only Holly and Steve braved a swim. Lake Michigan is massive and it is hard to imagine that it is not the ocean when you look at it. The beach is stunning with piles of soft white deep sand and the water was wavy enough for great boogy boarding - except we didn't have boards!

We didn't really stop once we  were on the Interstate.  We shot round the bottom of Lake Michigan, heading towards Chicago.  We briefly considered going to the city but honestly it is such a huge hassle trying to get into a city that we would really need a good reason, and so we left it behind.

The road was incredibly busy with monstrous trucks passing us on both sides.  We have never ever seen so many trucks on one road!  Of course this area is one of the biggest manufacturing places in the world, so this would explain it. The condition of the roads does not help the stress levels much either.  You may not notice it so much in a car but boy, when you've got you entire house on wheels, EVERYTHING is rattling.

Steve and I are shocked at the poor state of many roads right across the US. Some of them are so bad they are falling apart in the middle, many are just badly patched for long stretches and quite often we feel like we have a flat tyre as the concrete roads all have ridges on them at intervals of a few metres.

When the road surface becomes smooth again we all breathe a big sigh of relief and feel calm again!

So after a stressful drive around the outskirts of Chicago we arrived at a LOVELY state park called Starved Rock Illinois.  It was well away from the interstate and a huge relief to be somewhere peaceful, safe with power so we could run the A/C.

It has begun to get very hot and humid again which we have not had to suffer since way back in West Virginia and Kentucky.  We have been by the sea and also near the great lakes where it has been considerably cooler.

We had a bike around this park and along the road outside it where we were able to get to watch a fantastic sunset over a huge field of corn in an idyllic farmland area  - just like you see in movies!!
