Wednesday 11th June

Steve biked down to the station which was only 1 mile to see what time the train left for Washington..... the last one had just gone!

So plan B was to drive a bit closer towards the city and try to park at one of the metro stations. This is what we tried to do. However it proved too difficult to park an RV in a metro station car park so we drove out and down the road and stopped to get our bearings.  We began to realise that where we had parked (in a swimming pool car park) was right next to a bus stop for the metro service.  So we decided to leave the RV right where it was and hop on the bus.  This is always a bit scary in a foreign country as you have to find out where the bus is going, how you need to pay and also remember where it was that you got on so you know where to get off on your way back!  (This was the bit we omitted to remember on the way back which caused a bit of stress).

So we managed to get a train all the way into the centre of the city and it was not that expensive. We bought a multi trip one day pass each so we could go where ever we wanted.

We met some very nice people on the train who showed us where to go when we got off so we went straight to the White House first and had a look at that.

We then went to the National Park office and picked up 2 Junior ranger sheets for the kids to complete as we were walking around all the different memorials. This is a big spread out place and involves a lot of walking. It was hot but bearably so thank goodness.

This took all afternoon and we were tired and hungry by the time we had done it.
We had visited the George Washington memorial, the Lincoln Mem. The Korean War Mem, the Vietnam War Mem, and also Capital Hill which was way over the other side.

The kids seemed to enjoy the adventure and were very good all day.

Washington is a very clean looking place and it was interesting to have seen it.  We did not get to go to the Air and Space Museum unfortunately as we ran out of time.  We seriously considered going back the next day but it was quite an effort finding a spot for the van and we didn't feel we could park in the swimming pool car park again.  The kids were exhausted too so we decided to give it a miss.

We got back to the van about 8pm and then had to find a State Park in the dark. This turned out to be a disaster as it was closed and there seemed to be no camping. So we got the GPS to tell us where the nearest Walmart was and we drove up there and parked up for the night.
