Sunday 18th May

We struck out from the Grand Canyon heading for Zion National Park - an adventurous target as it was quite a distance away. We stopped in Page at a Walmart (a huge supermarket) for supplies and to escape the heat (100 F +).

Back on the trail we discovered an extremely interesting visitors centre for a new National Monument named Escalante Grand Staircase - it seems they discovered as recently as 1998 that the area was loaded with dinosaur remains. The geologists have unearthed a great number of species of dinosaur and 80% of their discoveries have been of previously unheard of creatures. They had on display various skeletons and footprints. The ranger was particularly helpful and told us a lot about each creature and what they have found. Apparently one of the dinosaurs they have found it the same creature found in Hawkes Bay by Joan Wiffen!

On the road again we headed for a State Park recommended by the Ranger called Coral Pink Sand Dunes where we camped for the night amongst incredible sand dunes created by a gap in a mountain range which accelerates the wind to a velocity that is perfect for sand dunes. We had a great time walking out to the top of a dune where we played with the sand which was very much like corn-flour. It sort of poured when you pushed it off the top of the dune and "farted" when you jumped in and out of it.

We arrived back at Indy just as it got dark tired from a totally unplanned but completely fulfilling day.
