We woke early due to the noise and heat and decided to get away from Las Vegas as fast as possible. Can you blame us?!
As we were leaving we decided to fill up with fuel. We are pretty careful where we are buying it as the prices can vary up to 50c a gallon. After Steve had put about $100 worth in we saw an even cheaper place so stopped to top up. A man standing in front of our van said he could see water coming from under the engine..... it turned out to be a stuffed radiator hose. Having found a place recommended to us we ended up spending 2 hours having 3 hoses replaced as a precaution. Lucky we found a garage that could do this for us straight away! It was a bit hot but I did some school work with the kids and had a little sleep while Steve hovered around with the mechanics. It cost us $200 but we were so glad it hadn't been a major disaster in the middle of nowhere!
After that we headed up the road intending to get to Hoover Dam which was not very far at all. We decided to stop at Lake Mead which is a huge recreation park with many places to stop and several camping areas. We camped near the lake at Boulder Beach. It was beautiful there, shaded by gum trees and Oleander bushes. The lake was just down a track so we headed down there on our bikes for a swim. It is the most unusual spot for a massive lake in the middle of the most arid scenery I have ever seen.
