We drove into San Diego this morning and went to Balboa Park. This park is beautiful with heaps of museums and the zoo right in the middle of the city. The museums would take a week to explore all in very impressive buildings built in Spanish mission style with fountains, pillars, palm trees, courtyards and walkways. We saw a little of the splendour from a free trolley bus and then walked to the zoo.
The zoo was quite impressive with a massive range of animals - at first we thought it wasn't as good as Auckland Zoo but we realised as the day wore on that the place was huge and contained more to see than we first thought (the map was a little lacking). We stayed for about 6 hours in the end and were eventually all "Zoo'd out"
We then drove to "Old town" which is an Historic State Park - about 4 miles out of the harbour city. This is where San Diego started as a Mexican/Spanish mission town. They had managed to keep it intact because the city "moved" closer to the port when shipping became a big deal all those years ago. We went to a famous Mexican Restaurant for dinner "Old town Mexican" recommended to us by a lady I met at Disneyland and tasted the local faire.
We drove out of the city a little later than expected, as it was getting dark, and we ended up over-nighting in a noisy Baptist church car park because we couldn't find the state park campsite we were looking for.
