Friday 2 May

We awoke early to the sound of some fellow campers leaving early (6:30am) - maybe they were cold as they slept in a tent on the sand?

We had decided the night before to drive the next 250 miles and slightly inland directly towards San Francisco in one go, so we set off early.

The drive down highway 101 was uneventful and easy although the concrete road through Santa Rosa was quite broken up and hard on the tires and nerves.

We calculated that we have been getting around 10 miles to the gallon in the RV. The US gallon varies in price from state to state. In Oregon it was $3:55 and there was no extra tax, here in California it is just over $4 per gallon and tax is added to that price. Wow it hurts when it costs $100 US to fill the tank, but we have no choice so on we go. I guess that compared to NZ petrol is still cheaper a US gallon at home would be $7.80 approx. In the UK petrol would be even more expensive I guess? I remember back in 1992 here in the states gas was $1 - $1.20 a gallon!

We are staying tonight in a KOA camp in Petaluma. It is supposed to be one of the best in the country - well it certainly must be one of the most expensive at $60 per night. The facilities are what I consider to be just fair in relation to the price - to compare a better site was $18/night in Oregon right by the sea. We are staying here because we want to do their day trip into San Fran tomorrow. I wont tell you what that is costing as it would make your eyes water but it seems a better option than driving a big RV around the city.

Well that is it for tonight - a big day awaits.
