I open my eyes – all is dark. I rub them – still, no light. Inching forward, my bini clad head emerges from the mountain of blankets and sleeping bags – there is now some light but also an icy, breathtaking chill. Quickly I dive back into the warm darkness of our nest. My second attempt at getting up is more successful. Determined I scrape the ice off our sleeping bags and shake the water bottle to see if all its content has already gone into the solid aggregate state. A thin trickle escapes the frozen bottle neck. Mmmmmmmmm! We crawl down the icy ladder of the rooftop and look up. During the night our tent has transformed into a castle of a million shimmering icicles. The moment would be romantic were it not for the cold wind taking our breath away. So instead, we quickly pack up and hope for warmer climates. This aint camping for sissies.

The Turquoise Coast

We were not disappointed. The Turkish coast proved simply stunning. Kas is this small, yachting/holiday/fishing village. The white-washed houses are built up against the cliffs and look down into the clearest and most turquoise water I have yet seen. We have a lovely campsite right on the water's edge. The days are warm enough to go for a swim and the evenings mild compared to inland Turkey. As this is probably one of the last chances to wear shorts and bikinis we extend from one night, to two…to six….before finally setting off for Istanbul.
