Llandudno - Stadtmission - Bontebok Park

Something needs to be said about German and Swiss time management...it tends to be pretty damn perfect.... Countless people have asked us why we chose the 19th of April to embark on our adventure up North. I am sure that as a response most of them expected a deep and meaningful reason...long hours of mediation, fervent prayer and wide consultation must have led us to choose this particular Sunday to depart. The truth is far from it and I guess reflects the nature of this trip. A desire to have some fun! The reason was that we still wanted to enjoy the summer months in lovely Cape Town and just as the April chills hit our shores head up the coast for warmer pastures. And this is exactly what we did! On the said day we left the little flat in Llandudno, jumped on the heavily loaded LandRover, with all our trip and other possessions neatly packed in numbered ammunition boxes and headed off. The sky was heavy with cloud and the air full of winter foreboding. It was time to go.

We arrived at the Stadtmission, my church since memory and were warmed by a lovely service and final blessing for our trip. Heinrich, the pastor of this small and family-like congregation, gave us 7 verses, one for each day, on our long journey. We have stuck them up each day on our dashboard and are encouraged anew to travel with God - what a great companion!

Friends and family waved and swam away in some tearfilled eyes as we left the church parking lot and headed for the N1. We had begun the Manic Trip!!!

I guess this is as good as any an opportunity to thank our many friends and very supportive family for the love, advice, cards, hugs, balloons and prayers that you sent, and keep sending, with us. We appreciate this more than you can imagine and having you there that Sunday meant a lot to us - you really understand at that moment of leaving that you are held and loved.

We headed up the Gardenroute and were soon met at the first farmstall in Grabow by the Kühne family and a big hand-drawn poster wishing us 'Gute Fahrt'. The artwork as inspired by Max himself and has travelled many kms with us since - thanks, we think a young budding artist is growing up there! A great lunch of burgers and slapchips followed - some more hugs and we were once again on our own. Thanks to you Mike, Martina and Max for making the trip out and wishing us well on our journey.

The first night

So the immaculate German-Swiss planning resulted in us leaving just as Cape Town entered its winter phase...it of course also resulted in our first big dilemma:

MM: well it IS raining!

Nic: yes, but we can't already capitulate on the first night and go to a B&B, we have 8 MONTHS to go - 8 CAMPING months!

MM: well, ok, ok, I agree....(tough SA chick)....nothing like a 'Wassertaufe' to start us off

...and with that we headed for the Bontebok park in the pouring rain and started the fire thanks to the trusty sunumbrella shielding it from sure extinguishing. No complaints were heard as we sliced succulent fillet and washed it down with some 2004 Shiraz. No harm done in still enjoying the good life whilst we can.
