Mabuhay!
Well, the last 2 or 3 days have been rather slow... sort of. We've spent a lot of time in the Jeepney and a van just travelling to our destinations. The day before yesterday we took a Jeepney to a garbage dump in Quezon City. There we observed squatters making living by reselling trash...literally. I've seen that before in Guatemala City, but there were about 3000 squatters there, so the magnitude of it all it just overwhelming. Everyone has been so nice and welcoming, so we aren't feeling the threat that we were warned of. Filipinos are very happy people, despite extreme poverty in most of the country. A few of us have come down with upset stomachs... so that has put a damper on some of our excursions. Everyone is fine; we went out to the bars last night so that must mean things are well with everyone. Yesterday we went to a town that was put 1 story underground by the eruption of Mt. Pinatubo in 1990. The local Catholic church now uses the choir level windows as their front door because of how deep the solidified ash is now. It was pretty intense to see this town literally buried over 10 feet underground. We also went to Subic Bay and observed a very nicely put together town. It's an old naval station converted to one of the biggest export locations in the Philippines, as well having numerous tourist activities. It was a big change from downtown Manila or rural country sides that we were used to seeing.
Today, we head to Apo Island, Dumaguete, Malapascua, and Boracay for the rest of the trip. So, again, we will be experiencing a major flip in lifestyle... a little more exotic, but we will still be in fairly rustic conditions. I will finally be able to start my research and I have a few helpers by my side, as well.
That's all for now. I need to go find some breakfast! Hopefully I can update more when we get to the beach.
Paalam! Bye!

Nice travel blog.

However, I'd like to point out that the town is named BACOLOR, not BACALOR.

More power!
