We have now been in Dublin for two weeks and it is starting to feel more and more like home. My friends and I have become excellent navigators of the city and are starting to get into a routine.  Every day last week we had class from 10am until 4pm.  We are taking 4 "mini" classes, all of which are teaching us about Irish culture, history, politics, and issues within Northern Ireland.  Our introductory classes will end on Wednesday, since we are traveling up to Northern Ireland Thursday morning.  We will be there for three nights and I will post a new entry once I get home!

Earlier this week a few of us headed over to the Dublin Castle.  Although no one stays at the Dublin Castle anymore because of security reasons (there are office buildings right across the street), it was once a beautiful home for British royalty that came to Dublin and later on for leaders of the Irish Free State

Yesterday my friends and I took a day trip to the small seaside town of Howth.  We had no idea what to expect, except that the DART (the train) would take 30 minutes to get there.  Once we arrived, we couldn't believe how beautiful the town was.  After exiting the train station, we walked around a small farmers’ market.  They had everything: cakes, olives, hummus, crepes, and even “California” bread (the woman was from CA!)  After looking around, we made our way to a small restaurant that served fish and chips.  It was such a delicious and appropriate lunch to have in this fishing town.  Once we finished, we headed to the cliffs.  Apparently this was all there was to do in this small town besides eating so we knew that we had to give it a try.  And boy, am I glad we did!  Although it ended up being the muddiest two-hour hike of my life, the panoramic views of the sea were breath taking.  You can see in the pictures below just how fantastic the views were.  I loved it so much that I am going to take my family there when they visit in February!

After class today, the entire program headed over the Kilmainham Gaol (an old Dublin jail). Kilmainham Gaol has played an important part in Irish history, as many leaders of Irish rebellions were imprisoned and some executed in the prison by the British and in later years by the Irish Free State (the number of executions doubled when Ireland took control of the jail when the country gained its independence from Great Britain).

That is all for now.  I will write again soon!
