After lovely days at the beach we took a four hour shared van ride (a high 110,000 VND - why? how?) to the Cetnral Highlands of Viet Nam - to the honeymooners' capital of Da Lat. The guidebook said "quirky, bohemian" Vietnamese people said "Don't go" or ´t's Disneyland" or even an encouraging "Well, you are on your honeymoon, you should go, it's nice up there" I was drawn to prospects of cool weather, hot coffee and a different landscape and this mysterious charm ....

What did we find? Nothing too special in town, we walked all afternoon looking for something ... (even though walking around town mid-day is a no-do for us) .. we walked around the lake. We did sample some good Da Lat wine, made from mulberries (what the silkworms eat, yum!) And I was very happy with a hot, steamed sweet potato from the market! (i had been awhile since I had a proper potato!)

Day 2 we took a tour around the country side so see many coffee plantations, silkworm and silk factory - very interesting how they make silk! and other agriculture. We visited the last king's summer palace and a Zen Buddhist Wat. Oh, and "the crazy house" This is where the start of Da Lat's odd reputation starts? Designed by the daughter of a close man to ┌ncle Ho, she has been allowed to build, and is still in construction a house made for Alice in Wonderland - I'd hate to be her neighbors! Ernie even met her (I think she's in her 60s, though I don't think he imparted his architectual advice ..) I'll try to include a picture ...

The nature and cooler temps in the central highlands is great, and I'm sure more rewarding experiences are byond Da Lat ...Definately a world apart from Sa Pa!
