While we weren't planning on heading north of Hanoi, we decided to make a 3 day trip to the hill town of Sa Pa, Vietnam. It is an easy overnight train trip from Hanoi that brought us into Sa Pa around 9am.
We had made reservations in a remote cabin area that entailed a 45min jeep ride over washed out roads and dodging buffalo roaming in the middle of the road. We didn't know much about this place and were having second thoughts based on the difficulty of getting out there. To our surprise, we arrived and found a less-than-a-year-old group of 24 cabins perfectly situated on a hillside overlooking the Sa Pa valley. The buildings all were built out of local stones and wood and is owned by a danish man who runs tours from Denmark. We only stayed a night but had a wonderful experience that included an amazing lightning show in the sky and a wonderful dinner in their lodge area.
While Sapa we also took a day long hike into the valley with a local guide. The scenery was very beautiful with the stepped rice fields in full green and a rushing river to walk along.
Our next stop is in Central Vietnam to the city of Hue...
