Our day started at 11pm when we had dinner at Barafu camp and organised our back packs for the slow climb to the summit of Kilimanjaro, myself and 4 other team members and a doctor and guide (nelson) set off and by 4000 metres we had lost 3, myself and the remaining team member in this group climbed over scree for about 4-5 hours and climbed incredible heights over a very short distance, at about 5500 metres I suffered altitude sickness and almost called it a day, the nausea and tremendous headache coupled with lack of breathe made it very difficult to climb but I took some medicine from our team doctor and a pep talk from nelson and my fellow climber to encourage me to soldier on, a few hundred metres on I felt fine but tiredness had set in and my body shut down, the only thing keeping me going was my family and the reason why we all set out on this challenge in the first place (Alice),at about 7am the sun began to rise and at 5000 metres the views were breathtaking and all sorts of emotions had set in. We reached the first summit called Stella point which is Kilimanjaro secondary peak and had a further hours climb to reach Uhuru peak which means freedom in Swahili, the views were breathtaking, which was a great consolation for hiking 7 hours
We started our decent back to Barafu camp where we had breakfast and made our way down to our last over night camp called Millennium camp only 5 hours away from Mweka gate and our hotel were we are all looking forward to a hot shower, off to supper now before getting into our tents for a well earned sleep, will blog tomorrow from the hotel
