We Arrived into Colombo 22nd October. Overall Colombo wasn't very nice, a dirty city where we got hassled constantly. We were the only white people there, got a lot of stares and were frequently being targeted by con men! We were glad to leave when we set off on the train to Kandy. This was an experience in itself. Train ride was reallly beautiful but if you don't have a 1st class ticket it's a race to get a seat. Public transport in general is amazingly cheap here. Kandy had stunning views but the town itself was similar to Colombo.
Headed down south to get to the beaches. We met a policeman on the train (who wasn't a con man) who recommended that we visit Mirissa beach. This was a lovely place. Very friendly people. Found a good place to stay right next to the beach. There was a good reef break for surfing plus nice bars and restaurants along the beach. Hired a motorbike to see the sights, drove round the south coast testing Ben's newly acquired driving skills!
Ben had a boy's day and night out with a local fisherman's family, sampling local cuisine (best meal of the trip) and drinking copious amounts of arrack! He was welcomed into their home, good (if broken) conversation and experienced real Sri Lankan hospitality, dancing the Sri Lankan way! A traditional home - basic, with a well in the garden. An enlightening experience!
Overall, Sri Lanka is one of the most beautiful countries in the world - with the worst food! All the gear but no idea!
