Travel Day, Montezuma to Parrita to Rendezvous with Costa Rica Craig

6:20 Montezuma -Bus to Cobano-Bus to Paquera-Ferry to Puntarenas- Taxi to Bus Station then bus to Arrive  Parrita  1:30



Costa Rica Craig was there at the Parrita bus station to pick us up when our bus arrived from Puntarenas.

He now has a pickup instead of the SUV he had when were here two years ago,  and we loaded everything in the back of his camper shell and  were off.

Stopped off at a grocery store near the bus station to get a few supplies that we needed for dinner and breakfast in the morning.

From Parita it is a slow drive up hill on a gravel road for about 45 minutes. The road also goes on up to the Central Valley and San Jose. Two buses per day each way pass by Craig's turnoff, so that is an option some time in the future.

This is a new house and further up the hill from his other house.

Formerly owned by a rural Costa Rican family, this older cabina  is rustic,  needs some repairs but you forget that when you see the view outside from the kitchen. He had added the kitchen and improved the bathroom. The kitchen is all open air and the view is into the valley and mountains and goes on forever

We promptly remaned it "the hide" because in the first 20 minutes we sat there we had over 15 different birds roosting in a tree down the hill from his house! What a treat. Parrots would actually fly up into trees right by the house so we were able to get some great shots of them.

Visiting and catching up over wine, vodka and orange juice, and began preparing for our dinner. Craig used his pressure cooker to cook a local bean than is similar to a pinto, then pressure cooked some beets while I worked on the salad. Robert was busy uploading pictures taking a moment every now and then to capture one more bird, the sunset over the mountains or just our surroundings.

Craig grilled pork loin for Laura and Craig and fried some "trucha" for Robert that was declared delicious. In fact the entire meal was great! Visited for awhile longer and because it had been an early day for all of us called it an evening. One thing about being up this much higher, it gets cooler during the night and when we woke up in the moning it was 71 degrees with only one fan blowing!

We all got up before the sunrise to have coffee and enjoy the sunrise and we were not in the least bit disappointed.  It came up over the valley and the colors were constantly changing.  There was mist rising up from the valley that added to the mystical quality of the morning.   The birds were quite active, highlighted by the parrots posing right outside the kitchen windows!

There is a long billed hermit hummingbird that actually flies into the kitchen, looks around and has a drink at the feeder and then is off. This is one of the largest hummingbirds, 6", with a very curved beak so was great to see.   This was the second very unique big hummingbird on this trip.  We had seen the violet sabrewing on a hike with Alonso on our first full day in the country.

Had a great breakfast, our version of the casada, Gallo Pinto beans and rice, eggs over easy, and mango, bananas, and papaya.  After we stuffed ourselves decided to go for a walk down the road from his house.  There are some Canadians having some very large houses down the road from him.  The builder was there and showed us the inside of one of them.  Must say Craig's place is more to my liking.

Came back from the hike and fixed pineapple and banana batidos and then had a lunch of basically the leftovers along with another nice salad before we loaded up for the drive down to Manuel Antonio.
