We were delighted to welcome Mum on this stage of our adventure
We begin in Calgary, the cowboy town, that rises from the plains like an upended trumpet, a monument to a million people here in the middle of nowhere, we dined on Bison and perused the city from the top of the Calgary Tower;

Malc of course, overcoming his dislike of heights, viewed the streets below thru the newly installed glass floor.

It seems the city's not finished yet, cranes as numerous as the blocks of high rise. It's certainly the city of glass; on a sunny day like a hall of mirrors, each edifice reflecting the next. Bright, shiny, reaching up to the impossibly blue sky like impatient children reaching up to mum shouting "Me, me.."

Rush hour begins in this city with an unstoppable entrepreneurial drive at 3.30 and ends about 6.30, traffic on the snaking ring roads ( mostly called something or other" trail") that help keep the city moving, never ceases. What it must be like during the "Stampede "in July heaven knows! It claims to be the cleanest and healthiest city in the world and the average age of the population is only 35. Although relatively easy to explore on foot, some of us needed time out.

We boarded the "Rocky Mountaineer Train" here for our first trip across the Rockies, www.rockymountaineer.com  Heading for Vancouver where we had stored Bree. We'd read about it and talked to others who'd done it but it far exceeded our expectations. We'd gone the whole hog and paid an arm and a leg to be gold leafers, this meant we traveled on the upper deck in the glass domed carriage that afforded us spectacular uninterrupted views of these majestic mountains.

The first sight of a snow cap brought oohs and aahs accompanied by simultaneous clicking that was too become very familiar. Our knowledgeable hosts not only kept us well informed but also well nourished. The dining was 5* the service impeccable.

Take a look at the menu!

Where else would those on second sitting for breakfast get a pre breakfast snack? - a fresh baked warm muffin!! Then there was the pre lunch snack...Oh - and did I mention the never ending bar? Well, anything you wanted really, tea, coffee, fruit juice, spirits etc etc.

The empty glass is Malc's!
The  experience, the views over the two days, the food, the friends we made will stay with us forever. A truly unforgettable journey, up there with the most memorable of our travels so far.

There are 12 extra pictures in the album, we will get our act together as we get into this facebook blog or whatever :)
